What is the difference between Massage and Cupping? And what is better?

Massage and cupping are both therapeutic techniques aimed at promoting relaxation, relieving tension, and improving overall well-being, but they differ in their techniques and approaches.

Massage:

  1. Technique: In massage, therapists use their hands, fingers, elbows, or other tools to apply pressure, knead, and manipulate the soft tissues of the body, such as muscles and fascia.

  2. Mechanism: The pressure applied during massage helps to increase blood flow, reduce muscle tension, and promote relaxation.

  3. Benefits: Massage is known for its ability to alleviate tension, improve circulation, reduce pain, and enhance flexibility.

Cupping:

  1. Technique: Cupping involves placing cups on the skin and creating a vacuum to suction the skin upward. This can be done using various methods, such as traditional fire cupping or modern vacuum cupping.

  2. Mechanism: The suction from cupping lifts the skin and superficial muscle layers, promoting blood flow and encouraging the release of tension. Cupping is often used to target specific areas and create localized decompression.

  3. Benefits: Cupping is believed to help with pain relief, inflammation reduction, and improving blood circulation. It is also thought to promote the flow of energy (Qi) in traditional Chinese medicine.

Key Differences:

  1. Application: Massage involves manual manipulation of soft tissues which usually includes COMPRESSION of the soft tissue. However, cupping employs a SUCTION mechanism to create a vacuum effect on the skin.

  2. Pressure: Massage relies on direct pressure applied by the therapist's hands or tools, while cupping uses negative pressure to lift and separate tissues.

  3. Marks: Cupping may leave temporary circular marks or bruises known as "cupping marks," caused by the suction pulling blood to the surface. Massage generally does not produce such marks but sometimes bruising may be present.

Ultimately, whether you choose massage or cupping depends on your preferences, specific needs, and the recommendations of your healthcare provider or therapist. Some individuals may find that a combination of both therapies provides optimal benefits for relaxation and overall health.

At Mindful Pelvic Healing, we offer a combination of both soft issue release and cupping. After a detailed assessment by our Chiropractor Dr. Singh, she determines which form of therapy will be beneficial. Dr. Singh finds that after releasing tension and increasing flexibility in the surrounding soft tissues with cupping and soft tissue release, manual manipulation (adjustment) becomes more effective and easy.

Dr. Singh also works closely with (and refers to) a Registered Massage Therapist and TCM practitioner at her clinic.
